FAQ: Should I use masking tape or painters’ tape?

calendar-icon 25 June 2020

If you’re wondering...no, masking tape and painters’ tape are not the same product. You’re not alone. Many professional painters sometimes are not 100% sure about which kind of tape is the best for their job. Masking and painter’s tapes are often confused, because they look and feel similar. We could say that they’re part of the same family: both masking tape and painter's tape are made with a crepe paper backing and have similar weights. But they have a few significant differences. Read this article to find out which masking tool is the best for your paint jobs.

The difference between masking tape and painter’s tape

Let’s make it simple: the main difference between these two kind of tapes is that painters’ tape is specifically designed to prevent paint from bleeding into masked off areas and to be removed without any unwanted residue. Masking tape, instead, is an older and thicker kind of tape, and the adhesive used is formulated to maintain an adequate hold. The most significant difference between masking and painter’s tapes is that painter’s tapes have a clean removal after the job is done, while masking tapes tend to leave residue behind if left up for the duration of a paint project.

Which one is best for you? Masking tape or painters’ tape?

Now that you know the main features of both tapes, which one is perfect for your paint jobs? If you are a professional painter and you are going, for instance, to paint a house, use painter’s tape for any painting technique you are going to use. If you can choose between all-purpose and precision tapes, that’s even better. Painters’ tape will give you flawless results (both indoor and outdoor) and sharp, clean lines.

masking or painter tape

If you have some classic masking tape with you, we suggest you to use it to secure masking film when covering furniture or large areas. Just be sure to use it where there’s no risk to damage the paint or the surface. Otherwise, you can use it for general repairs, bundling and protection from damages. What have we learned today? That all painter’s tapes are basically masking tapes, but not all masking tapes are painter’s tapes. Except for Q1®.
