An accurate preparation is an essential step to getting a perfect paint job and satisfying the customer. In this article, we will explain how to use Q1®’s masking tapes at their best to save time and get a clean job.

How to prepare the surface to cover

Even the stickiest masking tape won't stay put if you apply it to a dirty surface, no doubt. Before you start masking with tape, do some cleaning: you'll save yourself a lot of time and frustration.

Usually, a thorough dusting with a damp rag works fine, but you can also use a detergent solution when in need. Wait for the surface to dry completely: use a dry cloth and let the air do the rest.

How to apply masking tapes in corners

To prep for painting corners, start by running the first piece of tape up the wall, making it a little long. Press the tape down into the corner with a putty knife, then cut along the crease with a utility knife and remove the cut-off piece.

This way you will get a nice sharp clean edge.

How to mask windows with painter’s tape

Applying masking tape to paint window frames is not as difficult as it seems.

Apply tape on borders first and make sure to follow the lines without leaving space between the wall and the window. When you get to corners, follow the instructions we previously wrote.

You can also use it as a base to stick pre-taped masking paper or tape and drape to completely mask the windows.

How to remove masking tape

Don’t forget to also remove masking tape properly! First of all, when do you have to remove masking tape? Wait until the paint is slightly dried, do not take off masking tape with wet paint.

When the right moment arrives, take it off! Use a 45-degree angle when pulling it away. Score the edge if the paint is too dry, or you will ruin your job.

Choosing the right masking tape for your job

If you're going to all the trouble of masking, you want a paper masking tape that will seal tightly to the surface and come off easily. But there's no single type of best painter's tape that will work in every circumstance.

Look for the right masking tapes for your paint projects.
